Some information on the Huichol:
Location:
They are a group
of indegenous people that live in the Sierra Los Huicholes. the towns are very hidden in the mountains, and the big cities
nearby are Zacatecas and Guadalajara, but it is neccesary to travel through many other towns to reach either of them.
The
road:
The road is long and tedious, of pure dirt--a very narrow road. The bus is accustomed to making stops all
along the way in order to pick up more Huicholes. In some parts of we could observe an incredible verdant forest once out
of the drier parts, but the peculiar thing was it was winter and that it is an area with much earth and dust. The landscape
is beautiful and the montanas are very high, but there are also flatter areas in beautiful vallies, and in small canyons.
Clothes: The Huichol are characterized by their colorful clothing, especially the women, whose colors
are green, yellow and orange, of a very bright hue. The men on the other hand wear white clothes with colorful sashes. It
seems that the elders and community leaders prefer smaller, green shirts with slits in the sides and a green hat with many
decorations on it. Almost all the men and women wear sandals of the same kind, but many of the children go barefoot.

Es un grupo
de indigenas que vive en la Sierra de los Huicholes, son pueblos que en su mayoria se encuentran muy escondidos entre montanas,
las ciudades grandes mas cercanas son Zacatecas y Guadalajara, pero para llegar hasta donde ellos se encuentran hay que pasar
por mucho pueblos en el recorrido de la carretera.
Camino:
El camino es largo y pesado, de pura tierra y una carretera angosta. Aveces el autobus
tiene que parar por la carretera para recoger mas huicholes que se encuentran por todo lo largo del camino. En algunas partes
del camino pudimos observar un verdor increible como si fuera una seja de selva pero lo curioso era invierno y que es una
area con mucha tierra y polvo. El paisaje es hermoso por momentos y las montanas son altas pero algunas planas, el area muestra
un valle hermoso como si fuera un pequeno canon.
Vestimenta:
Los Huicholes se caracterizan por sus colores brillantes, en especial las mujeres que llevan colores como es el verde,
amarillo y el anaranjado en todas sus vestiduras pero con un tono algo brillante. Los hombres por su parte usan ropa blanca
con cinturones de colores y algunos que parecen ser los mas ancianos o lideres de la comunidad usan como una pequena camisa
verde con averturas en los lados y un sombrero verde con muchas decoraciones. Tanto los hombres como las mujeres usan sandalias
casi del mimo tipo, algunas parecen hechas y algunos ninos andan descalsos

Jesus Gonzales Mercado
He was born on a farm, and arrived at this town of Tuxpan in 70's and he already has some
35 years living in this town. His wife died on the 9th of June of the 2005. She has 3 older children who are all married.
They have always remained by the environs of the town and if someone goes away, they always return.
I ask him
as what the town needs:
-He replies:
-Potable water
-A good highway
-More classrooms for the school
-A
sewer
I ask him what are the main meals of the Huichol:
He replies:
-Corn and beans (Natural)
-When
we can, we eat meat of head of cattle, chicken and lamb.
-We drink natural water now and sodas.
I ask him, How
old is he?
I have 81 years and nothing hurts in me. I was married at 16 years, and my wife was 14, she died at the
age of 78 years.
Afterwards he invited me to his house to take some photos of him and to know more of his life, here
in its house he invited me to his dwelling, where I could observe some photos of family and different saints and Gods, some
arrows to hunt javelinas (peccaries) and red deers and votive candles with adornments in the sides. Soon we went to his yard
where I met his son Thomas who arrived in this town with his father when he was very young. The Gonzales work in the field
and already have children and grandsons, although they seem very young to be grandfathers. It said to me that the children
first learn their native language and afterwards they learn spanish in the school.
Nathan asks: What instruments are
played?
They respond: The violin of 4 strings, the guitar, the accordion, toroloche(like a big violin) and viguela.
When
we have traditional celebrations, we play only the violin and guitarrita.
Soon we met his nephew Vicente Gonzales
of 14 years, Vicente told us that he also works in the field and likes to play soccer(Their nickname for him is Mistakete
but they did not say why they called him that)
Soon another son came, his name is Manuel Gonzales de la Rosa. He talked
to me for a long time about his life and his desire to go for the United States and be a teacher, however, he has not studied
teaching but somehow they gave him his title so that he could be a teacher for the huicholes. Also he said to me that he lives
close to his Father with his wife and and its son of 5 years. He also said that he has a clothes business and is an artist.

Nacio en un rancho, llego a este pueblo de Tuxpan en los 70's y ya tiene como 35 anos
viviendo en este pueblo. Su esposa murio un 9 de Junio del 2005. Tiene 3 hijos ya mayores, que ya estan casados. Siempre se
ha quedado por los alrededores del pueblo y si se va siempre regresa.
Le pregunte cuales son las necesidades de
este pueblo:

-Cuando hay comemos carne de res, pollo y borrego.
-Tomamos agua natural y ahora refrescos.

Cuantos anos tiene y cuando se caso?
Tengo 81 anos y no me duele nada y me case de 16 anos y mi esposa tenia 14 anos,
ella murio a la edad de 78 anos.
Despues el me invito a su casa para tomarle algunas fotos y conocer mas de su
vida, alli en su casa el me invito a su santuario, donde pude observar algunas fotos de familia y de diferentes santos y dioses,
tenia flechas para cazar jabalis y ciervos y tenia una velas prendias con adornos en los lados. Luego fuimos a su yarda donde
conoci a su hijo Tomas quine llego a este pueblo junto con su padre cuando era muy pequeno. Tomas Gonzales trabaja en el campo
y tine sus hijos y nietos, aunque se lo ve muy joven para ser abuelo. El me dijo que los ninos primero aprenden su idioma
natal y luego aprenden el espanol en la escuela.
Nathan Pregunta: Que instrumentos tocan?
El responde: El violin
de 4 cuardas, la guitarra, el acordeon, el toroloche(Como un violin grande y la viguela.
Cuando se celebra las fiestas
tradicionales tocamos solo la guitarrita y el violin.
Luego conocimos a su sobrino Vicente Gonzales de 14 anos, Vicente
nos dice que el tambien trabaja en el campo y le gusta jugar al futbol (Su apodo me dijeron es Mistakete pero no me dijeron
porque le llaman asi)
Luego vino otro hijo de Jesus, su nombre es Manuel Gonzales de la Rosael me dio una larga platica
hacerca de su vida y su deseo de ir para los Estados Unidos como maestro, lo cierto es que el no hizo estudios superiores
pero de alguna manera le dieron el titulo para que ensenara entre los huicholes. Tambien me dijo que vive cerca a su papa
junto a su esposa y y su hijo de 5 anos. Ademas me dijo que tiene un negocio de ropa y atesanias.

Oportunidad: Los
Huicholes no tienen iglesias cristianas almenos por el area de Tuxpan. Por eso hay la necesidad de mandar missioneros a esas
regiones de la Sierra de los Huicholes, si hay alguien interesado en ir por esos lares y quedarse alli por un tiempo me gustaria
ponerme en contacto con esta persona que sea de preferencia alguien que domine el Espanol y que tenga facilidad para aprender
otro dialecto, ademas de ser misionero o tener experiencia trabajando con nativos en Latino America. Ellos son personas que
se abren si uno les muestra amistad y respeto por sus costumbres, fue una alegria el conocerlos y tratar con ellos como creo
que lo seria para otras personas que se interesen en hacerlo del mismo modo.
